Springwell Welcomes Peabody Graduate Student as New Musician in Residence
Springwell Senior Living WelcomesPeabody Graduate Studentas New Musician in Residence
Springwell Senior Living in historic Mt. Washington is pleased to announce that Cameron Welke is the community’s new Musician in Residence. Welke, from Fairfax, Virginia, is currently pursuing his Master of Music in historical performance on lute and theorbo at the Peabody Institute of the Johns Hopkins University. He will be living and performing at Springwell until summer 2020.
Welke began his musical life as a classical violinist and a rock and jazz guitarist, and studied classical guitar as an undergraduate. He holds a Bachelor of Music in classical guitar performance from Belmont University.
As part of the Musician in Residence program, Welke has his own apartment alongside Springwell residents. He will perform at least one hour each day in the common areas and hold monthly concerts for residents and guests.
“One of the reasons I decided to get involved in the Musician in Residence program was because my grandmother and great-uncle recently passed away from dementia and Alzheimer’s disease, and experiences I had playing music for them when they were sick planted in me a deep desire to find a way to work with my music in senior communities,” said Welke.
“I most look forward to being a part of the everyday life at Springwell – interacting with the residents, getting to know them and their stories, and being able to keep a consistent and open dialogue about how they are experiencing my music and how I can tailor my performances to best speak to them and make the most meaningful impact in their lives,” he added.
“We are so pleased that Cameron will be joining us as our new Musician in Residence,” said Phil Golden, Principal and Executive Director at Springwell. “Our residents have been thrilled with all of the great Musicians in Residence we have had over the past 4 years. They really enjoy getting to know the musicians and having the opportunity to hear them perform on a regular basis. The Musician in Residence program is definitely a great benefit to our residents at Springwell.”
Welke is an active and up-and-coming member of the Baltimore early music community who specializes in all different types of historical plucked instruments. He brings his sensitive and evocative artistry to the lute, theorbo, and baroque guitar in a wide variety of solo and ensemble settings, and is passionate about performing Renaissance and Baroque music in a way that creates an emotional connection with his audience.
He is currently a member of the Peabody Renaissance Ensemble, the Baltimore Baroque Band, and Sacred Monsters, a duo recently founded in tandem with soprano Kyle Leigh Carney.
