Designing a Life You Don't Want to Retire From

Most of us have spent decades building our days around someone else's blueprint: work schedules, carpools, household to-do lists, and weekends shaped by whatever needed doing.

‍

This chapter offers something rare: the chance to decide, deliberately, what your days look like. Not a life you step back from, but one you'd happily choose again every morning. Here's what that kind of life can look like — and how it plays out day to day at The Homestead, Springwell's Independent Living community in Mt. Washington.

‍

Start With What Gives You Energy

The most fulfilling lives are built around what makes you feel most like yourself.

‍

Think about the moments in a week that leave you energized: a long lunch with good conversation, an hour in the garden, the last chapter of a book you couldn't put down. Those moments aren't extras. They're the blueprint.

‍

The trick is making room for them. When time goes to upkeep and errands, the things we love get pushed to the margins. That's why so many people find maintenance-free living is less about convenience and more about reclaiming their calendar.

‍

Keep Curiosity on the Schedule

There's no age limit on learning something new.

‍

Some of the most rewarding days are the ones that stretch you a little: a guest speaker who changes how you see a subject, a book club conversation that runs long, a first project in the art studio. Curiosity keeps a day interesting — and gives you something to talk about at dinner.

‍

Music has a place here, too. For more than a decade, Springwell's Musician-in-Residence Program with the Peabody Institute has brought concerts, practice sessions, and one-on-one performances into everyday life on campus. This season, residents are welcoming acclaimed pianist Tom Zalmanov as our newest Musician-in-Residence.

‍

Build In the People

A fulfilling life has plenty of room for other people.

‍

Friendships rarely happen by accident. They grow from shared routines — the familiar faces at a morning exercise class, the Mahjong table that fills up every week, the neighbor who saves you a seat on the next outing. When connection is part of the rhythm of a day, it stops being something you plan and becomes something you simply enjoy.

‍

As Springwell resident Lois M. puts it: "There are so many nice people here and I have a lot of nice new friends. We look after each other."

‍

Leave Room to Slow Down

Not every hour needs a plan.

‍

A well-lived life includes breathing room: a quiet morning in the library, a stroll along the walking path, an afternoon in the courtyard with nowhere else to be. Beautiful surroundings make those unhurried moments easy to find — and easy to savor.

‍

Life at The Homestead

At The Homestead, daily life is built to support the life you choose. Residents enjoy spacious, updated apartments on a 15-acre campus, with beautiful gardens, walking paths, restaurant-style dining, a fitness center with daily classes, an art studio, a library, and a salon. A community shuttle handles scheduled outings, while concierge service and 24/7 security take care of the details.

‍

What you do with all of that is up to you. Some residents fill up their social calendar; others protect their quiet mornings. Either way, the goal is the same: a life so full of what you love, you'd never want to step away from it.

‍

We'd love to show you around. Schedule a tour and see what your days at The Homestead could look like.
