Intern Henry Sellinger Explores His Passion to Help
Few people are lucky enough to discover their passion at a young age, and even fewer are able to follow it. But Henry Sellinger is beating the odds. This past spring, Henry joined Springwell as an intern during his last semester at Friends School of Baltimore. And by all accounts, his internship was a great success. Phil Golden, executive director of Springwell, said, “To see Henry so well received by the residents and staff, doing something he wants to study more in college and making such a difference here at Springwell, it was just the icing on the cake. I know the residents and their stories had an impact on him, too. It just couldn’t have turned out better. ”As for Henry, he said, “I LOVE the personal relationships that I developed with residents. They really care about me and I care about them. I wasn’t expecting that connection.” Henry’s duties ranged from escorting residents to rehab to accompanying them to bingo and lunch. He even played pool with a group every Tuesday. “It’s been a really great experience. ”There was also the opportunity for Henry to shadow the social worker and dietician at Springwell, making it possible for him to attend weekly meetings with the nursing staff and discuss how residents were faring socially, emotionally and physically. “It was a great opportunity to look behind the scenes at the important work these people do.”“I am very interested in helping others, and I want to explore all age ranges to see what fits best. However, while being at Springwell, I’ve discovered that I really like working with seniors.”In the fall, Henry is heading to Ohio University to major in Social Work. Ultimately, wherever his path takes him, it’s sure to be guided by his passion to help.
