A Springwell Love Story

Phyllis and Jerry Cohen tells us their 68-year marriage is based on two principles: Take the good and bad together, and compromise.

Phyllis and Jerry met because Phyllis’ grandmother lived across the street from Jerry’s family. Phyllis and her family visited “religiously” every Sunday. As a teenager, Jerry became interested in Phyllis, the girl across the street.

Phyllis belonged to the No Name Club at the JCC. One day the club went on a hayride. Phyllis invited Jerry along as her date. They had a nice time so they went out again.Jerry took the #8 bus to Wilkins Avenue to pick up Phyllis. They continued on the #8 downtown, to lunch at Hutzlers, go shopping or see a movie at the Century Theater.When WWII started Jerry joined the Navy. Phyllis wrote to four boys in the Navy...and wrote the same letter to each one. But only Jerry wrote back to Phyllis every day.

After the war, Jerry attended Loyola and joined the basketball team. Phyllis attended every game. Before long they were a twosome. And when the time came to propose, Jerry got down on one knee in front of Phyllis’ entire family and proposed.....the rest is history!
