The Golden Years: Isolation in Seniors is a Growing Problem

October 9, 2024

Isolation in Seniors is a Growing Problem

By Phil Golden, Executive Director

According to the results of a National Poll on Healthy Aging sponsored by AARP and the University of Michigan’s academic medical center, isolation is a growing problem among older adults between the ages of 50 and 80. The survey results show that 1 in 3 adults say they lack regular companionship, and 1 in 4 say they feel isolated from other people at least some of the time.  I’ve recently heard loneliness referred to as “a Silent Killer.”With millions of older adults across the country struggling with feelings of loneliness and isolation, it is more important than ever to support our aging population. After more than 30 years in Senior Living, I feel that counteracting isolation is the single greatest benefit of living in community for older adults.  At Springwell, we recognize the impact of socialization on our residents. That is why we strive to encourage our residents to stay active, taking part in the wide range of social, educational, spiritual and health-oriented activities offered on campus. It’s why we encourage our staff to be warm and friendly in building relationships with residents.

Springwell’s Activities Director, Heather Entwistle, and Concierge team work very hard to ensure that our residents have plenty of options each day when it comes to staying busy and active. Our monthly activities calendar lists a variety of social events, outings and adventures, health and wellness activities and other engagements, all available to our residents at no additional cost. Our residents enjoy getting together for cocktail parties, offsite lunch outings, volunteer engagements, shopping trips, exercise classes, swimming, gardening, quilting and more. There is always something to do and friends to meet at Springwell, and our residents agree that dining together is one of the best aspects of our community. Springwell offers a number of unique restaurant and café-like areas throughout our campus, making it convenient for residents to enjoy meals together each day. Whether they prefer The Terrace Grill, the Beechtree or the Sherwood Dining Room, our residents can enjoy delicious and nutritious meals with friends and neighbors.
