Springwell Welcomes Newest Musician in Residence: Myroslav Mykhailenko
If there’s one thing Springwell residents really appreciate, it’s live music.
That’s why Springwell collaborates with the Peabody Institute of the Johns Hopkins University and welcomes a Musician in Residence to live on campus in exchange for showering residents with their artistry.
This month, Myroslav Mykhailenko, an internationally acclaimed pianist from Ukraine, will become the newest Springwell Musician in Residence. An avid soloist, collaborator, and chamber musician, he is a versatile artist who loves to pursue an active music career and create meaningful music experiences.
Says Mykhailenko, who immigrated to the United States in 2017, “I truly value performing because it brings people wonderful emotions. It also allows me to connect with people at a deeper level.”
ARTISTIC ACCOLADES
Described as a “music prodigy from Ukraine” by WTTW’s Chicago Tonight, Mykhailenko has captivated audiences worldwide with his virtuosity and emotive performances. His impressive background includes winning top prizes at the 2022 Chicago International Music Competition and the Concours International de Piano Ville de Gagny in 2017. He also won prizes in the Medici International Music Competition, Rocky Mountain Music Competition, and Birmingham International Music Competition.
Additionally, Mykhailenko’s talent has been showcased at renowned venues such as the Anthem Concert Hall and Meridian International Center in Washington, D.C., and on Chicago’s WFMT Introductions program.
Currently, Mykhailenko is pursuing his Bachelor of Music in piano performance from the Peabody Institute of the Johns Hopkins University, where he studies with Benjamin Pasternack. He formerly attended the Midwest Young Artists Conservatory and was a scholarship Fellow at the Music Institute of Chicago’s Academy, a training center for advanced pre-college musicians. Mykhailenko studied with Lyudmila Lakisova and Jose-Ramon Mendez. Before immigrating to the United States, he studied at the Kyiv Lysenko State Music Lyceum under the tutelage of Nina Naiditch.
CONNECTING WITH OLDER AUDIENCES
Mykhailenko’s passion for music extends beyond performance; he is equally dedicated to arts outreach and education. He has a wealth of experience performing in senior living communities in both Chicago and Baltimore, adapting his performances to the unique atmospheres of each setting. His ability to connect with older adults through music is a testament to his empathy and understanding of the power of music in enriching lives.
As he begins his residency at Springwell, Mykhailenko looks forward to creating a dynamic and engaging musical environment, offering residents the opportunity to enjoy live performances and participate in the creative process. He views this role as a chance to give back to the community and continue his journey of using music as a bridge to connect with others on a deep emotional level.
Mykhailenko states, “I have played for a great number of older adults, and every time I perform classical music for them, I can sense that they are very attentive and connected to the music I play. In general, older people truly enjoy classical music, and that makes me happy too. Their responsiveness encourages me because I can feel that they are listening and searching for the meaning in music as well.”
