Meet Springwell’s New Artist in Residence

Welcome our new Artist in Residence, Sarah Lynn, a baroque flutist and Peabody graduate. Lynn, who graduated from the Peabody Institute in May 2017 and is now pursuing her Graduate Performance Diploma, will be living and performing at Springwell until summer 2018.Springwell’s “Artist-in-Residence” Program is an initiative that offers a local artist complimentary accommodations, in exchange for the provision of ongoing entertainment and interaction with community residents. As part of the Artist in Residence program, Lynn has her own apartment alongside Springwell residents. She performs at least one hour each day in the common areas and holds monthly concerts for residents and guests.

As well as playing the baroque flute, Lynn also professionally plays baroque and renaissance recorders, the renaissance flute, the crumhorn, and sings predominantly renaissance repertoire. In her free time however, she loves to play Scottish and Irish music on her fiddle.

“We are so happy to have Sarah here as our new artist in residence,” said Phil Golden, a principal and director at Springwell. “It is imperative for us to embrace intergenerational opportunities, and to have the presence of young people like Sarah is very important to our residents. They enjoy getting to know them and interacting on a daily basis, and they develop special friendships. And the music throughout the lobby is an incredible bonus.” Having grown up in a musical family, Lynn took up the violin at age 4, and by age 12 had added the flute and the piano to her accomplishments. Before moving to Baltimore, she lived in Oberlin, Ohio, where she performed as a soloist with Apollo’s Fire; The Cleveland Baroque Orchestra, The Case Western Reserve University Baroque Orchestra, The Maple City Chamber Orchestra, and The Trinity Cathedral Orchestra. Her robust musical instruction began in high school, when she became the recipient of the Young Artist Scholarship at Oberlin. At Springwell, Lynn has plans to teach residents how to play the recorder and start a recorder ensemble. She is also looking forward to bringing her colleagues to the community and hopes to start an Irish band.

“Springwell already feels like home to me. Every person has been so nice,” said Lynn. “I love my beautiful apartment and my new neighbors. They are always looking out for me, and I enjoy playing for them. We really have a connection through music.”

Lynn follows last year’s Artist in Residence Julien Xuereb, who was a classical guitar graduate student at the Peabody Institute.
